Ares had begun lusting for Athena, but when she had persistently refused his advances the war god had gone to Hermes for instruction on how to fulfill his lustful dreams for the war goddess. Hermes then consulted Morpheus, and with a spell Morpheus had helped Ares to send himself into the dreams of a sleeping Athena. There, he seduced the war-goddess, and she awoke with a startle; assuming that it was all a nightmare.
